The Kitchen Kulture Minizine Concept is an original take on the niche minizine layout for a different audience. Minizines were created as an independent-based media for experimental work, sharing art, and even personal expression. Their hand-held sizing allows a sense of intimate connection between artist and viewer where only a finite number of people can share the same experience. Seeing how rich and rare of a connection minizines can cultivate, I wanted to capture that same intimacy while focusing on a different medium that expresses art and expression; an expression through cooking.
Kitchen Kulture Minizines highlights food and culture by focusing on a single cultural dish from different regions while sharing step-by-step instructions on how to prepare the food at home. Cooking is a way of expression that all backgrounds can generally unite on while also acting as an intimate medium to learn about culture through engagment. With the focus of both practical skills and new knowledge, Kitchen Kulture has the potential to be a standout among independent print media.
At the start of each issue a quick overview about the dish’s origin will be present. Being able to better understand a food’s history encourages cultural learning and engagement through research. Along with the historical context, proper cook prep information such as serving size, prep and cook time, and a full list of ingredients are displayed for readers to get the necessary things needed to cook.
The colors of the minizine were inspired by the warm tones seen within ecuadorian encebollado. Tones of off whites from the cooked yuca and tuna work cohesively with the rustic orange seen from the hearty broth of the stew. Additional hints of yellow and purple seen from other elements of the dish were used to tie the palette together. Other design elements such images of the Ecuadorian coast line and the jagged lines reflecting an indigenous tone bring in unique details that reflect the dish’s conception.
Throughout the minizine clear easy to follow instructions are added to let readers comprehend the dish in digestible pieces. Important key words can be seen highlighted to keep readers engaged to ensure important steps are not forgotten. As you progress through the steps images corresponding to specific steps help readers have visual stimulation to better absorb the recipe seen.
